Phenylethyl Resorcinol

Description

Synthetic antioxidant often seen in skin-brightening products. The most compelling research looked at the results of a cream with phenylethyl resorcinol plus three other skin-brightening agents. The product was applied over a period of 3 months by 20 women, all of whom also used sunscreen. At the end of the study, it was determined that the women’s uneveness decreased by 43%. The problem is we don’t know how much of this improvement is due to phenylethyl resorcinol, as it wasn’t used alone, which is the case with most products using this ingredient as a means to improve the appearance of an uneven skin tone. Until more research comes to light, this isn’t an ingredient to bank on for great results if an uneven skin tone is your concern; however, it’s fine to use in products that also contain other skin-brightening ingredients with established track records of success.

Phenyethyl resorcinol based products are known to be light and easily absorbed by the skin.  As mentioned earlier, it halts melanin formation thus problems like hyperpigmentation can be addressed easily. It also possesses antioxidant activity. When our skin gets exposed to the environment, because of environmental pollutants/ harmful sun rays, free radical exposure can reach up to the cellular level and may start damaging the skin. PR scavenges off free radicals, it gets exchanged for important skin proteins. So the skin protein can still retain their original structure, which helps skin cure the early aging signs like wrinkles, fine lines, and dark patches formed on the skin. It also retains moisture in the skin and conditions it. It heals the skin and makes it look much more even-toned. It may help sustain the product for longer because of the anti-oxidant nature.  It is used in moisturizers, creams, lotions, bath products, and other skin and hair care products.
